Here’s the Pitch…
I don’t own a TV so I get my baseball fix the old fashioned way by listening to it on the radio. I’ve noticed that these broadcasts have found some interesting spots during the game where they incorporate advertisers right into the play of the game. This is not new of course but increasingly more creative. One example is, “the 15th out of the game was brought to you by Geico”. As if that little gecko flagged down a fly ball at the warning track to end the inning. Didn’t happen. They bought an ad. The networks have gotten it down to selling an ad for every arbitrary during the game and for me it makes things a little more entertaining. Here are a few that you could have heard along the way. Probably not though. Most definitely not. Complete with game commentary reenactment.
Announcer: “I’m not certain but I’m pretty sure that Hanley Ramirez is faking an injury and his manager is now taking him out of the game. The manager has ordered him to some immediate R&R on his yacht…and well, that sports fans is your BP Slick Moment of the Ballgame! Nice work Hanley.”
I thought that was a little tasteless when I heard it. Couldn’t believe it. He’s learning from the best I suppose.
It gets worse though.
Announcer: “Bases loaded, 2 outs, bottom of the ninth with Albert Pujols batting. The rookie pitcher is in a jam and the pressure is really on him. A homerun would end the ballgame and here’s the pitch…it’s hit hard to deep center! The outfielder is at the wall…he leaps…and makes the catch! Game over! The pitcher has gotta check himself after that one and THAT my friends is your Huggies Snug and Dry Moment of the Ballgame. Disaster averted.”
I guess there are a lot of parents out there listening to baseball games. I’m not sure.
I heard this one just the other day:
Announcer: “A-Rod has really been pressing for that 600th homerun lately. Here’s the pitch…it’s hit deep and it’s outta here! Alex Rodriquez hits his 600th homerun and that little moment in history is brought to you by Juiced brand Multi-dose Needles and Syringes. Congratulations Alex!”
Ugghhh. I guess they had been saving that one up for a while. It’s seems that even the richest teams are really going for it.
This one was probably the most surprising of them all.
Announcer: “The pitcher is in a jam and it’s going to take a MIRACLE to get him out of the inning. Here’s the pitch…it’s hit right to the shortstop on a bounce, he throws to second for one out, here’s the throw to first…DOUBLE RAINBOW!!! OOOOOHHHHHH HA HO WOW!!!! What does it mean? It means the game is over!”
So I guess being famous for an Internet meme is not as accidental as I thought.
Lots of crazy ads out there it appears. Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. Of course none of this ever happened. These are all wonderful people and brands…except those syringes.
